Twin bed (or toddler bed) – worries?

My 19 mt old will eventually need out of his crib… we plan to get pregnant this summer, and we’ll need his crib (& room), and I want him transitioned to his new big boy bed well before the baby comes.
I am pretty set on a twin bed instead of a toddler bed… for lots of reasons. But I worry about him falling out! I know you can do guard rails. but they don’t extend all the way or at the foot of the bed.
I also worry about how he is to get up & down ok (and in the middle of the night, safely).. so I need to use a step stool? Can toddlers navigate that at midnight??
Twin bed tips?

I used a day bed. It uses a twin mattress and along with the guard rails it worked really well. The guard rail only protects half of the bed so they can scoot down and slide off to get off the bed. If they need help getting on the bed get a stool. Also don’t forget the night light for the room hallway and bathroom. My child would not leave her room with out them on. O YEAH don’t forget to buy the plastic cover for your mattress its a life saver.
