How to stop my dog from taking my things outside?
I have a year and half old leopard hound/ridgeback while I’m gone if I leave the back door open he takes things of mine (pillows, socks, hats, comforter, shoes) outside and sets them there. How do I get him to stop I’ve already grabbed him and told him no with him standing there and also “spanked” him with a little force. Much like a slap on the hand to a child.
If the back door is left open I’m normally gone no more than 3 hrs if even that. Sometimes it happens when I run to the store for 15 mins other times he does nothing. I just installed a doggie door which is another task I’m findin to get him to go through.
He’s still young. It’s like having a toddler. You can’t expect him to leave your things alone in your absence. You must confine him so he can’t get to these things….or keep the things out of reach. Gradually as he reaches maturity at about 2.5 to 3 yrs, the desire to get into all your stuff will subside substantially and you can allow him more freedom.
Don’t slap him anymore than you’d slap a small child. This is purely instinct, a natural part of being a puppy. Gently take the item away, tell him ‘leave it, or ‘out’, and offer an allowed item like a ball or chew toy, in it’s place.
