What J.R.R Tolkein books are essential to a “lord of the rings” lover’s collection?

I’ve read the The three lord of the rings books, as well as the hobbit. What other J.R.R Tolkein books should I read to get my fix of middle earth tales. Are there any more books that have to do with the ring? Like the first great battle where isildur killed sauron?

“The Silmarillion”, “Unfinished Tales of Númenor and Middle-Earth”, “The Histories of Middle Earth” (12 books, only pick up these if you’ve read the other two). These are the more important ones. In there you can also find descriptions of Númenor, its fall, how Elendil became king, etc.
Here a few for further reading, on more specific aspects:
“The Adventures of Tom Bombadil” (if you care for poems, if not don’t (!) buy it), “Bilbo’s Last Song” (again if you care for poems), “Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien” (for an insight into the author and his work), “The Atlas of Middle-Earth” by Karen Wynn Fonstad (if you’re interested in the geography of ME and the movement of armies in battles).
There are also several books on the languages such as “The Road Goes Ever On”.

Also, there’s an illustrated book on a tale already told in the Silmarillion, “The Children of Húrin”. It’s basically the same story but with pictures.
