What Americans call quilts?

I do not understand! I worked in Florida soon and I bring my own linens. I intend to buy everything there, but when I had a look online store seems to sell quilts of America. Sell quilt. I think quilts are padded, but all are decorated. It should cover? How can you wash? I'm very confused! Please someone can help me?
