What would you suggest if a child will not sleep in their new bed?

I’ve recently taken my son out of the crib. He’s far to old for it now.
I have put him into a toddler bed and he wont stay in the bed.
He just gets out after I tuck him in. & he stays awake till 12 at night when he finally falls asleep.
He thinks the bed is a fun thing to play around with.
He wont fall asleep in it. When he leaves the bed he ends up falling asleep on the couch or on the floor.

This has put you in a tough situation. While you want to ensure that your son gets a proper amount of sleep at night, you also want to get your own sleeping time.

Unfortunately, until he becomes accustomed to sleeping in his own bed, I highly suggest that you stay in the room with him until he falls asleep. Gently guide him to sleep by reminding him to close his eyes and not talk often. You could even set up a reward system in which he gets a gold star, etc., every time he falls asleep in his new bed before a certain time. After he has gotten a certain amount of stars, say 10, he will get a prize of some sort (a small toy, candy, etc). This seems to convince many children to fall asleep quickly; however, it doesn’t work for all. If necessary, you can lie beside him in the bed to ensure that he doesn’t play around with the bed or get up and leave. It may also be a good idea to remove all stuffed animals and other distractions that seem to be stopping him from sleeping.
