free sew your own crib comforter pattern and instructions?
My dad and husband are going to sew the nusery set for our new baby. But I am having a hard time finding a pattern or instructions online to make your own crib comforter. I dont want to buy a pattern for $14 when we will only use it once. Any suggestions on where I can locate such a thing?
You can use Google to find free patterns, if you know how to ask. (“sewing pattern baby comforter free” — put your nouns first so you get more of what you’re really after) There’s also a site called freepatterns.com that I’ve visited a few times. I use patterns very rarely and usually just make my own.
To make your own baby comforter, measure to find the size you want, or check catalogs to see what sizes these things usually are. Get some pre-quilted fabric and some backing fabric. Cut them to about 2″ bigger than you want. (i.e., if you want a 40″x50″ comforter, cut fabric to 42″x52″ — I’m just guessing at the measurements to give an example.) Put the right sides together so the edges are all even. Pin the two pieces together, all along the edges. Put your pins 6″-12″ apart, if you’re a beginner, and pull them out as you sew along. If you’re experienced, pin it in whatever way works best for you. Sew ALMOST all the way around the edges, leaving an 8″ opening in the middle of one of the sides. After being sure the pins are all out, stick a hand inside and turn the whole thing right-side-out. In the opening, turn the edges under and pin the opening shut, placing your pins about 2″-3″ apart. Sew a seam all the way around the edge of the whole comforter, staying close to the edges. This will invisibly shut the opening, as the top-stitching (the seam sewn on top after it’s been turned right-side-out) goes all the way around.
If you like, or if you can’t find a pre-quilted fabric to your taste, you can also add a layer of batting. Put it on top of one of your fabric layers before sewing. You’ll have the two pieces of fabric (the front and the backing) with their right sides together touching. Pin the batting behind either piece, it doesn’t matter which. You’ll have two fabrics and a batting, in that order, not fabric, batting, fabric. It’ll do that AFTER it’s been turned right-side-out. If you use batting, you’ll want to quilt it a little to help hold the batting in place. Put a few hand-stitches in strategic areas or use embroidery thread and tie the batting in place in a few places.
If you want to add lace or a ruffle around the edge, there’s a special way to line it up so it gets sewn into place when you run the first seam. Please email me for specific instructions for that.
