how do you correctly apply handcuffs?
when using 2-link Peerless brand standard handcuffs, what is the proper procedure for applying to a subject who is compliant? I ask because i am entering a career in loss prevention. i have 5 years experience 10 years ago in a juvenile detention facility. I was effectively an administrative officer of the court, and in my state AOC employees do not have the power to effect arrest, and we especially did not have the power to apply physical restraints on juveniles.
from the little bit i remember, the cuff is stored with the last tooth latched, held in a pistol grip with the dominant hand, and applied with the key hole facing up, away from the subject’s fingers in the event they are concealing a key. how tight should they be applied? of course a subject will complain they are too tight, but what is the best method to ensure security without physically injuring the subject? are there any websites that provide information regarding loss prevention techniques?
You were correct in your description. You need to “load” most handcuffs. That is have the handcuffs on the last two notches. I wouldn’t keep it on the last notch because it could work through prior to applying the cuffs. Some newer cuffs like ASP cuffs, do not require “loading” because they work so smoothly. ASP cuffs were originally thought to be easily “picked” but that problem has been corrected. Have the suspect stand with their hands behind their back with the backs of their hands together which makes their thumbs point back towards you. Their palms should face outward. The suspect should pull their hands away from their back which can be done by telling the suspect to bend over slightly. This gives you room to apply the handcuffs so the cuffs don’t catch on their clothing. Grab the suspects thumbs firmly with your weak hand. Apply the cuffs to the suspects right wrist first by using quick pressure on the wrists with the cuffs. The cuff should work free enough to latch. Quickly apply the cuff to the left wrist in the same manner and then tighten the cuffs to your satisfaction. Some people teach that there should be atleast one finger seperation between the cuffs and the suspects wrists. That is not always the case. Some peoples hands do not have the same shape and they can escape these cuffs by tucking their thumb and pulling. Tighted the cuffs to your satisfaction. Loose cuffs hurt worse that tight cuffs anyway. Sometimes you can turn the persons wrist and make the cuff fit properly then actually tighten the cuff and they will stop complaining.
