If you only had one afternoon to spend in Vancouver, what would you do with it?
My mother and I will be in Vancouver from 1:00PM until sometime the next morning. We have never been to Canada before, and want to make the most of our time there since it’s so short.
We are from Colorado, so mountains and trees don’t really impress us. Ocean stuff is a little more interesting, since we’re landlocked at home–but we’ve seen plenty of oceans. I am most interested in the culture of the area. I’m not really shooting for a history lecture or anything, but since I’ve never been to Canada before I think it would be cool to do something distinctly Canadian–something that we might not get a chance to do at home. I’ve looked around online a bit, and have some ideas, but I would be really interested in getting the opinion of somebody who has spent some time in the area.
I’m pretty sure we will be staying slightly south of the downtown area, but we’re ok with traveling a bit to get to wherever we go.
Where should we go?
For one afternoon…if the weather is good or just slightly inclement… Stanley Park (downtown) is perhaps the definative Vancouver experience . It combines the ocean with a good feel for the people of the city. Theres totem poles, the aquarium is there and a 7 mile seawall (you can rent bicycles in the area if so inclined).
Other options for a clear day:
Grouse Mountain (gondola ride up 2,000 feet above the city) on the North Shore . I know your from Colorado but that gives you a really really impressive view of the city, oceans and surrounding mountains and theres other things to do up there as well.

If the weather is bad…(if your coming in August/Sept usually weather is good) take a stroll down Robson Street.. lots of shops and boutiques down there
I can predict one thing; you’ll want to come back for a longer stay. Enjoy your trip
