what are the benefits of steam cleaning your pillows and mattress?
I was also wondering if this harms the fabric/ material used in the mattress (and also pillows as well) ? How often should this be done? Does it have a benefit? Best answer get 10 points!!!
I realize most people don’t even think about this, but is there anything else in your house that you don’t clean? Everything depends on the material and I don’t just mean the cloth but what is inside. It should not harm your bed (mattress & foundation) but check the “do not remove” tag for info on what is inside. Your pillows should be fine also but again check. Unless they are foam rubber, memory foam or feather they can usually go in the washer & dryer. I like doing two at a time it keeps the washer from unbalancing then if you don’t normally use dryer balls get some or some clean tennis balls or even clean sport shoes and put in the dryer also, this will help them dry and help distribute the filling evenly and makes it fluffy. But if you have feathers or foam go ahead and steam them.
Steaming (should) kill dust mites and germs, help get the dust out also remove odors, and if done promptly can remove stains. Follow this up with a good vacuuming. As to how often, well… if nothing special happens twice a year is the recommended amount. If you have a mattress that needs turned this is the time to do it. Spring forward & Fall back, change your smoke detector batteries these are all good times to remember to do it. As for the pillows you can follow the same timetable if you wish but I feel a minimum of four times a year is best. I will also steam/wash after a guest has used a pillow. You don’t mention if you are going to use a home unit or a professional. If using a home unit make sure you really have steam, you don’t want a bunch of hot water sprayed into your mattress. BTW, after steaming leave the mattress uncovered for about an hour then vacuum, even steam is wet and your mattress needs to dry throughly before you cover it or you will cause more problems than you are trying to fix.
