RECEPTION, not transmission! When I’m in a hotel, how do I build a better ANTENNA and attach it to my laptop?
When I go out of town, is there any fairly simple way to build a portable, foldable, RECEPTION antenna (dish?) to capture a better signal from someone ELSE’s router. I’m in a hotel… I don’t have my own router… I want a better chance of picking up and using someone ELSE’s router thru the hotel window. My laptop has no “socket” to attach an external antenna, so that’s an additional problem.

Here’s what you can do.
On the bottom of your laptop, you need to find out which removable panel will give you access to your wireless card. There’s usually not many panels, so just remove them all. One will have your wireless adapter in it, and it will probably say “wireless adapter” or something on it (mine does). You will see an antenna wire coming out of that card. You can simply connect another wire to that same antenna connection and run that wire to a window and tape it there. You will have very much improved wireless signal reception. I would recommend removing the wire before moving your laptop, because exposed wiring is bad. It may be a bit of a pain, but it’s the cheapest and simplest way to improve reception. Make sure you carry the necessary screwdrivers with you on your trips.
Any fairly narrow, flexible wire will do just fine.
