What can I do??
We own a GOdlen Retriever male, who is about 18 months. When we got him in the animal shelter, he had no training whatsoever. So, I taught him Sit, Lie Down, Paw and I am TRYING to teach him Stay. I have tried everything.
My problem is:
He broke his Pen which cost over 3000 euro. He broke 2 walking leads, and 3 tieing leads.
He is a very very stubborn dog.
If we let him off his lead (I hate the lead), he runs off because he is a people person. He usually comes back, but theres always the risk.
At first, I wanted the electric fence. Dad had said No, because he would go through it. I did my research, and I have decided its not such a good idea.
What can I do to stop him from running? I mean like we have a big garden, but we just can’t let him off because he will knock the old man down across the road.
Please, please does anyone have any ideas? I really want him to be a trained dog, who won’t jump or stray for a few hours.

Sounds like you are doing what you know how to do and that is good. It also sounds like it is time you find a trainer to teach you how to train your dog in areas you are unsure about. You can get lots of tips on here and the internet, but it sure helps to speak to a real live professional about YOUR dog who can watch you as you practice and help you do things better.
I’m curious…why do you hate the lead? Your dog’s lead is a VERY important safety device until he is trained to be totally reliable and always come to you no matter what exciting things are going on. When you take the lead off your dog in public you are essentially saying that you are READY to accept any consequence: dog getting run over, dog knocking someone down, dog getting injured, dog scaring a child, dog catching a squirrel and eating it…and so on.
SO unless you are ready to face ANY consequence do not take the lead off your dog.
As far as stay here is a general idea of HOW to do it:
Start with your dog on a leash and treats in your pocket in a room with NO distractions or other people or other dogs.
If she knows SIT, then tell her to sit and while standing right in front of her give her the “talk to the hand” hand signal and say “STAY” at the same time. Wait 2 seconds and then say “good dog” give her a treat and say “OKAY” which means she is released from staying. You may use another word rather than “okay.” For example if you say “okay ” a lot when you talk, better to use a different word so she doesn’t mistake it for a release. You can say “free” or “freedom” or “release” or anything. Just stick to the same word each time.
When she can stay for 2 seconds 8-10 times in a row. Call it done and wait till later to practice again.
At the second practice session review the 2 second stay a few times and then increase to 3 seconds. When she can stay for 3 seconds 8-10 times in a row. call it quits and practice later.
At the third practice session review the 3 second stay and jump to 4 seconds…repeat as above.
After you have progressed to 5 seconds you can jump to 10, then 15. When you have progressed to 15 seconds then you can move farther from her. Up until now you have been standing RIGHT in front of her.
Now give the hand signal and say STAY and move 1-2 feet farther from her. Then progress to 20 seconds, then 30 then 45 seconds.
Once you have a SOLID stay at 45 seconds…you can add more distance…4 feet away from her.
At 60 seconds (1 minute) you can be the full 6 foot leash away from her (hold on to the leash).
Once you have SOLID stays at 1 minute then start adding distractions. BUT when you add distractions you have to cut the distance and the time down to a very short time…like 5-10 seconds. Here are some distractions you can add:
1) You can walk around her.
2) You can wave your arms.
3) You can turn your back and pretend to leave, but don’t leave her because you need to hang on to the leash and if you keep walking you’ll pull her out of the sit
4) You can dance around.
5) You can go into the backyard
6) You can go into the backyard and have someone bring your other dog on leash to walk around on the edges of the yard
7) You can go to a park that is mostly empty
You can go to a park and practice stays near a pond, or ducks, or people
Just know that if your dog continually fails many times in a row then you need to make it easier or else it will not learn. Dogs learn when they get it RIGHT.
If your dog gets up simply say “uh-uh” and put her back in place and wait another 10 seconds and praise her and release her. You can also practice praising and waiting longer so she doesn’t think PRAISE means release.
