why Dominican Republic was not affected by Hatian earthquake and they are in the radius and are twin islands?
Actually the Dominican Republic did suffer some disruption to their communication system as it was down for a couple of days. In addition to the fact that there is a major mountain separating the two countries the Dominican Republic have much better building codes than does Haiti which is a big reason why Haiti suffered as much damage as they did. In addition Port aux Prince was only a short distance from the centre of the earthquake which was also only about 5 miles below the earth’s surface, which was also a major contributor to the amount of damage.
I experience a stronger earthquake (7.2) in Martinique a couple of years ago but since it was 90 miles below the earth’s surface there was little damage even though we had a good shake. So you can see distance to the actually centre of the quake contributes to the damage.
