What is similar to the Merchant Marine Academy?

Okay im interested in the Merchant Marine Academy, but I also want to find out more about the other ones. I o believe that the USMMA is part of the Navy. What are the other ones like for the other branches of the military. A recruiter came down from Kings Point down to Baton Rouge to give us some info. Its sounds interesting with the money and stuff. It’s spring break and I need to use this time to do some research. This is something I probbably want to do after high school.

The USMMA is NOT part of the Navy. Kings Point is a sister school to West Point and Annapolis, and there are Navy and Coast Guard personnel there. KP graduates their students as officers with a Naval Reserve Ensign grade, and several continue on as Navy officers. Along with the Naval Reserve status, you will also have a military obligation to take care of (in lieu of paying tuition, room and board, etc); some elect to do their obligations within the Reserve (two weeks a year), most opt to fulfill their obligations through working on MARAD and MSC ships (pre-position ships, owned by the fed’ gov’t).

If you are interested in Kings Point you will need to get started NOW, not when you get out of high school. Kings Point, like West Point and Annapolis, take in a limited number of students per year, their grades and extracuricular interests need to be pretty good, plus you will need to be sponsored/recommended by either some government official (my husband had the state senator sponsor him).

Pluses: the education you receive at KP is extremely good, and graduates, whether graduating as an engineer or deck department, are quickly snatched up by companies like electrical companies, R&D firms and consultants, though most graduates head out to sea as US merchant marines. The reputation of the school often allows you instant access to many job opportunities; the alumni association is very large (I am not sure if there is one in LA; however, there is a very large, active one in Houston that counts among its members not only ship engineers and deck, but electrical and oil&gas company owners), and KPers like ‘to take care of their own’. Recruiters will tell you what you want to hear; other graduates will tell you all the pluses and minuses, though in my experience, not one of my husband’s crewmates or friends who came out of KP ever regretted it.

Minuses: Like any other academy, schooling is very strict, you will be required to wear uniforms, drill, etc. If you have any issues with authority, this school will not be for you.

If it is the Merchant Marine that you are interested in, and not just through KP, there are many decent maritime colleges scattered throughout the country, usually as part of the State college system – Texas has one in Texas A&M – Galveston, I don’t know if Lousiana has one. Like KP, you can graduate with the training and possibly license to sail, though you will not have the military obligation.
