A lot of Christians seem to think of Islam as brutal and primitive, but…?
…could it not just be going through a bit of a rough patch, like Christianity in the crusades and inquisitions?
Well, they think that because the Crusades didn’t happen until 1100 years after christianity was made, and not even all Christian groups were for that. The Orthodox were really angry at the Catholics for declaring such a thing. The Crusades were the first major violent act to be done in the name of Christianity,
When you look at Islam, even during Mohammed’s life time, war and battle were a means by which it spread. Every Islamic nation was conquered, not converted, by Arab armies. Unlike the Eastern Orthodox Christian Byzantine Empire, who’s golden age lasted for well over 1,000 years, the Islamic Arabian Empire’s (from Iberia to Syria) lasted for only 60-70 years. Seljuk Turkish Muslims destroyed the Islamic Arabian Empire, while Ottoman Turkish Muslims attacked the Christian Byzantine Empire. In response to the attacks on the Byzantine provinces in Anatolia, they called on the Catholic church, the only unifying force in Western Europe, to send military aid. The Byzantinese thought a few hundred to a thousand knights, but got a Crusade of tens of thousands of peasants was sent instead.
In Iberia, Queen Isabella, in an attempt to drive out the Islamic Moores who had invaded centuries earlier and treated the Spanish and Portugese Christians as a second class, started the Inquisitions to purge Iberia of anything outside of the Catholic Church to unify the peninsula into Spain – Portugal remained independent.
The Crusades and Inquisitions came out of conflict with Muslims – If Muslims had not invaded Anatolia, then the Crusades would not have happened. If the Muslims did not invade Iberia, then the Inquisitions would never have happened.
Although – Islam has done the world a great favor, because by blocking the riches of the Eastern world from the Western world, the West went West to go East – finding the Americas, and pushing society forward. Also, because the Ottoman Turks, Muslims, destroyed the Byzantine Empire, the Byzantine survivors fled west, spreading the learning of the empire to Western Europe and sparking the Rennaissance..
