Tips & Methods For Achieving The Perfect Paint Job
If you are planning to paint your house any time soon, you will want to have the job turn out great and get it done efficiently. By following these tips you can get a great looking and professional result.
Supplies
With any construction, preparation is always important. As you are considering how you are going to paint, you also need to consider your color. First measure the area so you know how much paint you are going to need so you can apply two coats of paint to the room. In general light colors expand a room visually, and dark colors shrink a room visually. If you opt for a light and airy room, then you can always incorporate dark colors as accent colors. You will also need to decide what supplies you will need to complete the job. Then stock up on your supplies, and you will be ready to get to work without having to make any more trips to the hardware store.
Choose the Appropriate Finish
Ensure that you choose the right finish for the job. Flat finishes are the best at hiding flaws in the walls, but they are hard to clean. Eggshell is a little easier to clean and excellent for use on walls. Satin is great for high traffic areas and is really easy to clean. Semi-gloss and gloss are great on trims and cabinets.
Prepare for the Job
Make sure that the walls are clean and any patchwork is dry. Remove as much furniture as possible and use a large tarp to cover what remains, as well as the floor. After the walls are cleaned and repaired, sand them lightly and remove dust with a damp rag. Mask off any trim and prime any wall patches, then prime the remaining wall space with a good quality primer, and then apply the base color.
Coat Number One
After the primer has completely dried, you can apply the first coat of your main color. First cut in your color around the edges of the room with a paintbrush. Then follow with a roller to apply the first coat of color. Always begin at the top of the wall and work towards the bottom. Load the roller with ample paint and spread it on the wall taking care to apply it neither too thickly nor too thinly.
Coat Number Two
Make sure that the first coat of paint is completely dry before starting with your second coat. If you apply additional paint before the first coat is dry, you run the risk of the paint not properly sticking to the wall. Even if it looks like the first coat covered everything, go ahead and apply a second coat. The color will have more depth and look richer on the wall. After the second coat has been applied, remove masking tape and let the room completely dry at least overnight. Then look closely to make sure that the paint has covered the wall completely and touch up anything that needs it.
