Installing your own desktop RAM
Ram otherwise known as “random access memory” is a memory format used in desktop and laptop computers that acts a go between the data transfer from your hard drive and processor. In simpler terms you could relate ram as a middle man helping data transfer speeds meaning the more Ram you have on your pc or laptop the faster your computer will operate.
Whether you have faulty ram or want to do an upgrade to make your computer faster then replacing your ram memory is quite an easy task that can be accomplished by anyone. Below I will show step by step on how you can change the ram in the computer in as little as 5 minutes.
Unplug all connections and remove your computers casing
Before performing an upgrade its important to ensure all connections are taken off to prevent any static charge damage. Depending on your particular model of PC will determine how you gain access to the motherboard to perform the upgrade. Please check your manual on how to safely remove your pc case to gain access to the ram modules.
Ensure the inside of your machine is clean and dust free.
Although this is not that important, it is advised you give a good clean to the internal parts of your pc to ensure it runs smoothly with its new upgrade. I suggest you use a compressed air can to remove dust from the unit while also using a cotton bud to clean internal fans.
Locate Ram module slots
The slots where the Ram memory is situated is usually located near the heat sink with small fan. These slots can come as 1 pair or 2 pairs of 2. These slots are easily identifiable by there narrow width and small clips on either side.
Starting the installation procedure
Once slots are located and you have the right memory in hand it is time to install the ram. If you already have the ram slots taken then remove whats needed to allow your ram chips to be installed. The process of removing these modules is just a case of lowering the small clips on either side and the chip should pop out for removal.
Lining up chip for installation
Making sure you have your ram chip aligned properly, make sure clips are unlocked in the down position before continuing to place chips in the module holes. I suggest inserting one side first till you hear a small click then applying pressure on the other side till you hear the second clip lock.
Replace the case and connect you PC
One completed slowly put your desktop back together and connect all accessories and power connections. Turn on your desktop PC and your computer should recognise the new addition and continue to boot into windows. Job done!
If you find that the computer does not boot there are a few thing you need to double check. These are:
- Insure you have purchased the right memory compatible with your specific motherboard.
- Try a different slot on your motherboard and try again. Perhaps one slot is faulty.
- Make sure ram is seated correctly and clips are holding ram chips down. Chips sitting in place should be sturdy and not be able to move.
Replacing your Ram is alot easier than you may think. By performing this simple upgrade yourself you are not only making your PC run faster but are also saving money, as many computer technicians charge a fortune to carry out such a simple process.
