What Down Bedding Is Used In The Summer?
As summer approaches a common misconception about down bedding is that it is too warm and not apropos for the warmer summer months. In actuality you can still enjoy many different types of down bedding including down pillows, featherbeds and down blankets. One of the biggest benefits of down bedding is that the fabric primarily used is made of 100% cotton – versus polyester which can trap warmth and lead to a ‘too warm’ feeling.
First of all you will want to make sure you store your heavier down comforter properly until needed in the fall again. In terms of top of bed warmth coverage – many folks like to use a down blanket in the summer. You still get the cloud like feeling of a down comforter – but less filling is used so that your body temperature is kept in check. One of the big differences between a down comforter and a down blanket is that not only is less filling used – but the size of the boxes quilted are smaller to keep the smaller amounts of down in place. Down blankets are commonly oversized and many times feature a decorative trim – such as a self flange, or a satin trim. Most down blankets of any size can be machine washed and machine dried.
Bedding basics like a feather bed is great for year round use. Not only do the lofty feathers allow air to circulate but it keeps your skin off of the typical polyester mattress thus further helping to keep you comfortable. Some types of feather beds – like a down top feather bed could over maintain a bit too much warmth so you could substitute with a basic baffle box style feather bed. This would provide the same type comfort, while keeping you a bit cooler.
Down pillows are used because of their ability to offer cloud like support and not feel stiff like a sponge which is common for many promotional polyester pillows. We generally advise that down, feather or down and feather pillows can be used year round. If you have not washed your pillow protector recently – now is a good time to keep it fresh and clean with a quick wash. Using a pillow protector will keep you from having to wash your pillows on a consistent basis. Washing a pillow protector is much easier than washing a pillow.
Although this story focuses on down bedding – we do recommend moisture management items like Tencel Lyocell sheets and duvets. These miracle fabrics feel like silk and wash like cotton – all the while offering excellent moisture management. Commonly loved for their ‘cool feeling’ – baby soft fabrics are also great for consumers with psoriasis and eczema. Tencel Lyocell is also well known for its very eco friendly production process and is generally considered superior to Bamboo fabric. Although they can be pricey – try buying ala carte pillow cases sets and learning about the fabric and then when you love them purchase the sheet sets or duvet sets that use Tencel Lyocell.
