Sometimes the hardest part in the day-to-day adventure can be the seemingly indifferent attitude of the locals. Trust us, there is nothing seemingly about it, its just good old indifference. When one considers the numbers, 10 million visitors a year, coupled with the fact that we Farang all look the same, it is easy to see why you might not be making an impact.
The best description we have heard down here at 24Phuket is, it works like concentric circles’: Most of us Farang are just passing through and so we have no impact in and on the Thai sacred inner circles. If we continue to come back on and around, we start to not only pass through the Thai’s inner circles but more importantly start to link our circles with theirs… A few of us are still having to tell the local 7/11 staff our preference for either box or soft when we get our cigarettes (see upcoming 7/11 Speak guide) and we have been frequenting it for more than a year. You might find yourself going to the same mom and pop store for weeks before that magical day when suddenly you are recognise and treated like the best customer in the world. It really is worth the wait. The first time you receive a proper Wai is a beautiful experience and surpasses all language barriers.
Last month we included an article on the virtues of being able to speak a little of Thai language. In our Continued efforts to help one readers have a deeper experience of the day to day this month we will be bringing you the first in our easy to use Thai Language lessons.
For now remember, Thai’s as a rule are extremely polite. It’s always a safe bet to finish every sentence with Krup (for guys) or Ka (for the ladies), and when in doubt smile… lots.
