Dom Brial, Cotes du Roussillon
Rousssillon is the most southerly French wine region, around the city of Perpignan next to the Spanish border. The principal red grapes are Carignan, Grenache, Syrah and Mourvedre with the main whites being Grenache Blanc and Macabeu. The region is also famous for Rivesaltes, a very fine dessert wine.
I recently visited an excellent producer in Roussillon, Dom Brial which manages to combine the traditions of the region with modern wine-making techniques and marketing. The result is a superb range of wines with modern packaging made from the traditional grapes of the region.
The winery is in the town of Baixas and the vineyards are located in the surrounding hills overlooking the Pyranees. They practice minimum intervenion in the vineyards and are restoring the patchwork of dry stone walls in the vineyards. The area is full of wild herbs and flowers and it is a real pleasure to walk in the hills. In recent years the vineyard has ben planting more Syrah vines to add finesse to the more robust varieties.
The range of AOC Cotes du Roussillon wines offer outstanding value at £6.49. The award winning white (Grenache Blanc, Malvosie, Macabeu) is fresh and aromatic with real depth of flavour. The rose (Syrah, Grenache) is a full bodied fruity style with raspberry flavours, more akin to a light red. The red (Carignan, Grenache, Syrah, Mourvedre) is a robust full bodied wine packed with fleshy fruit and spice.
The star of the range is the oak aged Fut de Chene. Twelve months oak ageing and then aged in bottle until ready for release, it is a complex wine with blackcurrant and savoury oak flavours. At £8.99 it compares very favourably to a Bordeaux at the same price. The magnums at £19.99 are even more special.
