Since South Sea Pearls are expensive and rare, many women prefer to buy a good-sized south sea pearl pendant, instead of opting for a rope of pearls. For one thing, getting a dozen or more South Sea Pearls of the same size and shape is in itself a rarity. If you own South Sea Pearl pendants, or any other pieces of jewelry containing South Sea Pearls, you need to pay special attention to how to take care of these rare pearls. Here are a few tips that will help you take proper care of your South Sea Pearl pendants.
In general, pearls have a soft surface. They may be easily marred, scratched or damaged if they are tossed with hard items in a jewelry box. Store your South Sea Pearls in cotton and keep them in a separate pouch.
One advantage of having south sea pearls in the pendant form is the limited contact these pearls have with your skin. When pearls are laid on bare skin, they tend to absorb the acid from the skin. Over time, pearls that are exposed to the skin will lose their luster and shape. If you feel that your pendant may be in danger of absorbing your sweat, then, make it a point to wipe the pearl with a damp cloth from time to time. You may also wipe them with slightly salty water from time to time.
South sea pearl pendants are very sensitive to acidic solutions like perfumes and vinegar. So, always keep your pearls away from the deteriorating influence of harsh chemicals. Hold your pendant by their metal part, so that the pearl is safe from any chemicals or dirt sticking to your hand. Also, remember that pearls can wear away quickly when exposed to heat.
To clean your south sea pearl pendants, use jewelry cleaners that are specifically for pearls. Steam cleaners, detergents, bleaches, baking soda and ammonium-based cleaners are all taboo on pearls. Do not clean pearls with abrasive materials like a scrubber or a toothbrush. Wear your pendant only after you have finished applying makeup and spraying perfume or Deo. Check the clasp and the pearl seating of your pendant from time to time.
