Cloning a flock of sheep?
I have a few questions on my homework that I need some clarification on:
1. How would a cloned flock be different from a noncloned flock?
-Besides the obvious, I’m not sure. =[
2. What is one advantage of having a cloned flock?
-If a sheep with desirable traits was cloned, then the cloned flock would have the same healthy or desirable traits, and there would be no harmful/less desirable traits.
3. What is one reason the farmer could not mate these cloned sheep with each other to increase the size of his flock?
-All the cloned sheep would be the same gender, so fertilization could not occur. (Is there a possible answer that pertains to the advantages/disadvantages to cloning a flock of sheep? My answer sounds pretty odd; I think I may be missing something. >__>;)
4. What is one reason that the offspring resulting from mating these sheep with a sheep of a diff. breed would not all be the same?

1. The only difference would be that all the sheep of one flock would look exactly the same. Sheep in another flock would have various variations in size, color, shape, etc.
Otherwise, there would be little or no difference in them.
2. Predictability as to life span, average health, reproductive patterns, etc. And, selective traits can be expanded throughout the herd. However, keep in mind that these cloned sheep would still have all the needs for survival as their more normal counterparts. As such, being a clone does not guarantee survival or less maintenance.
3. This is a very good question. Both male and female clones can be created. Nonetheless, a clone is always the same sex as the ewe that donated the DNA to be cloned. The only limitation that I can see might be one of so called recessive lethal-genes. There are usually a few lethal genes in all living organisms. They are typically masked by a dominate gene picked up during mating. Now that I think about it, there probably wouldn’t be any real limitation in mating cloned animals. In otherwords, if you took a cloned female animal and mated her with a cloned male animal from a different population, the mating and resulting offspring would be as normal as mating between animals of the more natural form.
4. In this case, the cloned animal is mated with a typical animal of the same species. There would be new genes added and the offspring would not be the same as either the cloned parent or the more natural one.
