Whats the difference between a kilt and a skirt?

I am going to a dance/party this Friday night and it has a Scottish theme. My GF is saying that propert kilts are really expensive (even to rent) and said that she can give me a plaid/tartan skirt to wear instead and no one would notice. Is this true? What’s the difference between a kilt and a skirt?

The difference is simple. A kilt is a Scottish-made, skirt-like article of clothing, usually made from wool with plaid designs. A skirt is a modern adaptaion of the kilt, usually made from more modern materials and cotton. The greatest difference, though, is that kilts are generally worn by men, and skirts are for women. I’d just find a plaid colored skirt for the party unless your friend is really picky on authenticity.
