Welcome, my name is Vistmita, I am only thirteen years of age and I live in Africa, Kenya. I became a woman at my village the same day I got caught, the ceremony I was enjoying as the dance was amazing. But when I was captured by the white people, they used hard metal ropes and tied them tightly around my hands and feet. I screamed and shouted for help but no help arrived: as they didn’t hear me. Before they caught me, I was helping my mum (after the ceremony) with the washing as she wanted me to get some flowers so she could dye the cloths and other household leisure’s, until those whites shot something in the air. Despite the shock from the sound, I ran as fast as the wind. But of course they ran after me. So now that I’m caught, I’m still praying to Allah, with hope… I fear a million thoughts that run through my head, as they are sleeping in a motel. One of the most fearful thoughts is that they might want to kill me with that weapon that goes bang! Even their faces give me the shivers, as they look at me as if they are disgusted by the sight. But why?
When those whites made me and others march to the shore we were still tied up in those metal ropes, when I saw humongous boat, it was made out of strong wood and had a piece of material on top of a pole called a moat. When suddenly a man whipped me across my knees, so I hurried back in line to a box shaped cage, where other people of my kind was. When it was closed and I think everything had been done (which was a couple of hours later)the box was moving harshly, but when I was going to ask other people no-one understood me, they was from other tribes, spoke different words. When, I realised that we was going into the boat, as I will die as there is no earth beyond the sea horizon, we all was dumped on shelves that was made for humans beds but I wasn’t allowed to move as I was only allowed to move 2 centimetres away from people. When we had food it was a dirty white’s food, which I hated as it made me throw it back up all the times I ate it. My respects from the whites from really terrible because every time we got to dance or to have a breath of fresh of air, as we only got out once a week. I really need to give the people who as died needs revenge so they can be happy as spirits. All i feel is that I will break or die of hunger.
Finally the boat stopped. We finally got exercise our legs after about six weeks and my eyes got a big fright as the sunlight got the best of them. As soon as we got out we were crammed into a big pen still all locked up. I saw lots of white people crowded on a concrete floor and suddenly a man started to beat a drum and more people started to come to the crowd. I was the first person to get out of this pen. I was pushed to a platform and lots of men were poking me and one made me jump and open my mouth. Then the man with the hammer type tool started to talk gibberish and the words weren’t understandable and people were putting hands up to deal with the gibberish person. I was sold to an old man he looked strict and unkind. When I got told to go to him, he told me to go onto the end of the wagon and it was 20 minutes to get to his house…
The old man known as my boss called me Sophie, I didn’t like this name but I have to put up with this because if I don’t I will get the bad side of my boss as he may whip me badly as I was watching as I got into the court yard. The courtyard was massive the floor was harsh and it bruised my feet, there was lots of people of my kind that looked more happier than I pictured because when I was at the platform I saw people that seemed like slaves that were looked very un happy. My work was to cook food for my owner because I was a woman, a woman that was less strong less important than men. I had to cook breakfast which was from an animal called pig the food was bacon it was also served with eggs and beans, they called this a full English breakfast. There was also dinner which was a soup of the day on Wednesdays it was chicken and leek then it was tomato soup, then vegetable soup I don’t really know all the days yet. But this work is very hard as the boss’s family want their food fast, and the oven is very hot and I’ve caused burns to my hands and arms. Inside the house seemed nice but I wasn’t allowed anywhere except from the kitchen unless I asked and ended with sir or madam. My food was much better than the food on the boat as I got a small amount of meat and a small amount of rice which I enjoyed. I had to wear a white dress as this looked smart to my master.
My chance of freedom as a good chance as my master gives me one shilling per two months so by two years I might be allowed to buy my freedom. My hopes are to go to my family and keep them save from harm like to move them away from the place I know they’re or maybe go to the north and find a job and maybe marry and have children one day. The white people make me feel like we’re the monkeys and were the wrong type of people, they make me feel like I’m the one that should have died many years before but they should have done that then.
